Artist/Owner Biography

My name is Kim Koyczan, the founder of Nature Spirit Soaps, an Indigenous Artist from Tahltan First Nation, and recent graduate of the Renewable Resource Management program (2024). I’ve lived in the Yukon Territory for most of my life and have always expressed interest in my First Nations culture. During my studies I found a way to mix both my traditional & scientific knowledge together with my personal interests, incorporating this knowledge into making my own skin care line of soaps, lotions, and massage oils made with wild harvest plant extracts that have been used to treat various illnesses throughout history in First Nations culture. I have been conducting personal research on various traditional plants, herbs & medicines while accumulating my own knowledge from using traditional medicines throughout my life. Nature Spirit Soaps skin & hair care products are made with extracts from medicinal plants found in nature. I harvest medicinal plants throughout the Spring & Summer months while spending time out on the land during nature hikes. Herbs that are not found locally in the Yukon are obtained from other provinces within Canada. Traditional medicines have been used by harvesting wild plants, bark, sap, stems and flowers, washing the herbs to remove any environmental pollutants, drying and safely storing them, boiling the herbs into tea when needed, and infusing oils with healing plant extracts for use in soaps & lotions. Traditional medicines have been used for holistic healing for various illnesses. Many common wild plants are often overlooked considered as pest weeds when they actually hold very powerful healing properties. Medicinal wild plants can be used to treat various skin conditions like hyperpigmentation, psoriasis, eczema, acne, rosacea, wound healing, preventing boils & infection with anti-fungal, anti-bacterial & anti-inflammatory properties. Plant extracts paired with complimentary essential oils have benefits that relieve arthritis pain, muscle, body aches, redness, sore joints and more with the soothing scents of nature.
